About Matheran

With lush green forests, a serene environment and unpolluted ambience, Matheran is a fantastic tourist destination near Mumbai. Matheran, the jungle on the top, was developed by British after it was 'discovered' in 1850 by Hugh Mallet, the Collector of Thane. Matheran is one of the few destinations in the world where vehicles are not allowed, making it the perfect break from the polluted environs of urban life.

The stunning views of the landscapes from the cliffs of Matheran offer memorable experiences to last a lifetime. The Hart point offers breathtaking views of multicolored lights of Mumbai city in the serene and cold nights. A two hour journey through the undulated hilly roads by bus can take you to this picturesque location.

With such excellent semi-evergreen and evergreen forest covering the entire tabletop, one does come very close to nature when in Matheran. While you are there, be sure to visit the major attractions – Panorama Point, Echo Point, King George Point, Louisa Point and Charlotte Lake.

If you are there for more than just a quick weekend retreat, you can also visit Porcupine Point, Paymaster Park, Panthers Caves and Hart Point. History enthusiasts can explore the ruins of Prabal Fort, which served the Marathas and the Mughals. Gateways and towers in the fortification along with the pond on top are the highlights of the ruins.

To keep the urban creature in you happy, the bazaar in Matheran offers excellent shopping facilities. Whether a short weekend trip or a weeklong vacation, you are sure to return home with a rejuvenated body and a refreshed mind.

Bird watchers could get rare sightings of the Malabar Trogon, the Malabar Whistling Thrush or the Whistling Schoolboy and a lucky wildlife enthusiast could get a glimpse of Pied Hornbills, Crested Serpent Eagles and the elusive Leopard. And if it is not your lucky day, the Bonnet Macaques, Hanuman Langurs, Palm Squirrels and Parakeets are always there!

Geography

Matheran covers a total area of 7.35 sq. km. With a generally flat top. The highest spot is at an altitude of 803.47meters from sea level – making it a very refreshing destination to visit anytime during the year!

With a small resident population of about 4000, the calm and quietude is ever so pleasant. To add to the comfort, Matheran has mild to cool temperatures throughout the year, rarely going above 35° C even during peak summer afternoons!

Climate

The weather is comparatively cooler here than the other cities of Maharashtra.

The summer season here generally lasts from March to the end of May. The temperature during this time can soar to a maximum of 32° C. But like in the cities, the heat is not searing. Moreover, the waterfalls and the constant mountain breeze make the summers mild and pleasant.

The winters also escape the extremes of nature. During November to mid-March, the temperature drops to a minimum of 16° C. The climate remains pleasant with slightly cold evenings, but the days are comparatively warmer.

The monsoon showers (mid-June to mid-October) are not mild drizzles, but come in the form of roaring rainfalls and thunderclaps.
